Understanding the Johari Window

A powerful framework for self-awareness and interpersonal understanding

Origins & Purpose

The Johari Window was created in 1955 by psychologists Joseph Luft and Harrington Ingham (combining their first names: Jo-Hari). This model was designed to help people better understand their relationship with themselves and others.

It's particularly valuable in counseling, team building, and personal development because it reveals the dynamics between self-perception and how others see us.

Theoretical Foundation

Rooted in humanistic psychology and communication theory, the Johari Window operates on the principle that increased self-awareness and mutual understanding lead to better relationships and personal growth.

It aligns with Carl Rogers' person-centered approach and Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs, emphasizing self-actualization through awareness.
